Amazing hostel. Nice environment, decent domitory, good shower and nice breakfast. The staff are warm-hearted and you can turn to them for any problems.
Very beautiful and clean hostel
Very beautiful and clean hostel. Staffs are very kind and gentle. Location is very good.
Awesome hostel!
Awesome hostel! Prime location on Edinburgh with comfortable and spacious rooms. Each bed had an outlet and a light. The beds were spread out so I did not feel very cramped like I have in other hostels. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable of the city. I highly recommend!
Amazing staff very polite and extremely helpful
Amazing staff very polite and extremely helpful and make you feel very welcome .. Very tidy place with cheap good breakfast, great location for tours, shopping, eating, and night life. Every night a event to get people together which I really enjoyed since I am a shy person at first. Events where extremely organized laid back and a lot of fun. Highly recommend this place definitely best place to stay… Read more “Amazing staff very polite and extremely helpful”

Well decorated, great staff, comfy beds and everything you could need
Nice small little place
Nice small little place at the edge of the city-center. Every room has a thematic .. my was “Gotham” it s mean that every bed has is own name like “robin” or “pinguin”, etc. You must pais 2£ if you wish have the breakfast from the hostel
Excellent staff
Excellent staff – one lady at the reception is really very polite and helpful – I am sorry I can’t remember her name. Clean rooms, very central location, good prices, I certainly recommend it to any visitors!
Best hostel I have ever stayed in
First off, great location. The Hostel is right next to the castle and the Royal Mile. It’s also next to some really good sit down places with great food. The hostel had great customer service and the workers very helpful and efficient. They had a lot of supplies on hand like shampoo or conditioner, converters, etc. I felt safe the whole time and the rooms/bathrooms were cleaned. The bathrooms were… Read more “Best hostel I have ever stayed in”
Very friendly
Very friendly, clean, tidy, helpful great knowledge of the local area and events going on also central location great value for money.
Very Nice. Friendly staff, lots
Very Nice. Friendly staff, lots of areas to sit, relax or engage in activities. Rooms are as expected, but the names are a nice personalisation touch. Activities are available daily, and I felt very comfortable to join in any time. Only con, would probably be the showers. There’s not enough space to change and stay dry when you finish, and the heads are not always maveuverable. If I were to… Read more “Very Nice. Friendly staff, lots”
Castle Rock Hostel is one
Castle Rock Hostel is one of the greatest hostels I’ve ever stayed at. Built with a warm and historic aesthetic, the building is incredibly decorated, comforting, and clean. The hostel itself maintains a social vibe with open lounge rooms and a large communal kitchen. The staff are out of this world – always welcoming and ready to assist. What’s more, the nightly planned events are (too much) fun. Shout out… Read more “Castle Rock Hostel is one”

Located right on the royal mile.
Located right on the royal mile. No complaints, friendly staff, clean rooms/beds, clean toilets and showers. Laundry service also available for £4. Would recommend for anybody wanting to stay on the royal mile.
Absolutely fabulous place to stay.
Absolutely fabulous place to stay. It was like to stay at the home party but with huge respect to another person. We took shared room for women. Inside the room was clean, really minimum but honest equipped (remember it’s hostel), another girls were nice, friendly, cultural & quiet.
Hostel itself is located in a real heart of the Edinburgh. It’s not just accommodation-it’s the way to know, to experience… Read more “Absolutely fabulous place to stay.”
First off, the location of the hostel is amazing.
First off, the location of the hostel is amazing. It’s right next to the castle and has some amazing views of the city. The employees are incredibly friendly and there are organized events most nights. Tonight, I’m going to go Scottish dancing. The hostel itself is very cute. The vibe reminds me of a coffee house. People hang out here and interact with each other. Overall, I love this place.
The best hostel you can
The best hostel you can possibly stay at, central location steps from the castle and the royal mile. Warm atmosphere, clean amenities, fun free events every night, fantastic staff, when you stay here you might not want to leave, I will definitely be back to Edinburgh just for this hostel.
brilliant find right in the heart of Edinburgh!
brilliant find right in the heart of Edinburgh! Thank you for honouring my requests even in a really busy time. these guys have set up a really good Hostel (having run one in Sydney I know the difference). love the shower units, can have a shower even on the coldest day in there. the cleanliness was fine, what you would expect from a hostel (not a five star hotel) he… Read more “brilliant find right in the heart of Edinburgh!”
Thoroughly enjoyed staying here
Thoroughly enjoyed staying here. Stayed for a total of three nights at different times in September of last year. Very clean and comfortable. The hosts are all friendly and trust worthy and it is safe to leave your bags there before your check-in time (which is hard to find at most hostels). LOTS of stairs. If you are handicapped, I do not recommend this place. But for anyone who doesn’t… Read more “Thoroughly enjoyed staying here”
Review of Castle Rock
It was a nice place to stay at, even the big rooms, like the 16 people I stayed in, had some privacy, and I was able to enjoy my stay instead of worrying about the place.
Very clean, had enough bathrooms, good maintance, and nice staff.
A bit pricey in their added on services (hiring a towel for 1gbp, or breakfast for 2 something), but overall I would… Read more “Review of Castle Rock”
Incredible value, especially because of the location!
The hostel has a great vibe and atmosphere. People working there were very friendly and made us feel at home. Everything is clean and the interior is actually really pretty. We loved the open kitchen. The wifi could have been a bit better.
quaint hostel centrally located
Royal mile backpackers is a quaint hostel centrally located on the Royal Mile. The location is perfect for touring the city. The staff were friendly and very helpful. Breakfast costs 2£ and is simple but substantial (toast, cereal, fruit, tea, ect). The beds were comfortable and you also get a locker to store your things in. Overall a great place to stay.
Great hostel
Great hostel – the staff are helpful and friendly and the place is always clean. The kitchen is a great idea. In the rooms with 10 beds, it can be a bit noisy and busy.
The most fun place so far!
First of all – the room has got themes!! Me and my friends stayed in the Avengers room, and me, being the swede, of course got the bed Thor. It was so much fun sneaking around watching all the doors with Sherlock, cursing and other themes. Minus for the stairs, but hey, what can they do about it?! The front desk provided a fun scavanger hunt that took us all… Read more “The most fun place so far!”
Nice enough place and not too expensive.
Nice enough place and not too expensive. The location is great and the staff are helpful. The facilities are surprisingly good including cosy lounge and kitchen area. The rooms were pretty sparse but that is to be expected.
Can’t say much about the hostel except that it‘s the best one
Can’t say much about the hostel except that it‘s the best one we‘ve ever stayed in. We slept in a 8-bed-room and it was just as comfortable as a double room. Roommates were young an nice, hat good talks several times, in the room there are 2 chairs, a table, a big window with view to the royal mile and every bed has 2 socket plus 2 USB ports for… Read more “Can’t say much about the hostel except that it‘s the best one”
Good social activities!
Good social activities! Good location. Beds and rooms are a little small, and the breakfast is just average. There was an unfortunate mix up with my check in, but the staff handled it extremely well! Overall a great choice
Perfect in every single way!
I booked this fairly last minute for New Years as I was late to the party, all my friends booked their accommodation earlier on. As all other reviews state, the location is just perfect. You are as central as it gets, prime location! The only staff member I saw was great, I forget his name but he tolerated my drunk talk in the very early hours! Would certainly go back.
Optimal hostel experience!
When I’m travelling and staying in a hostel, I’m usually looking for somewhere safe, comfortable, convenient, and cheap; any creature comforts are nice add-ons. One of the best things hostels can provide, though, is a sense of community, since many of the people travelling there have a lot in common. This hostel, like many, caters to young internationals and adventure-seekers, and it was so cool to get to know them!… Read more “Optimal hostel experience!”
This was one of the best European hostels I went to!
This was one of the best European hostels I went to! It was a huge facility, themed rooms, wonderful 24/7 reception, great breakfast, perfect location.. overall I was so happy I stayed here!! Will absolutely come again 😀
Located near the Royal Mile, is in a central position
Located near the Royal Mile, is in a central position. Nice rooms, very friendly receptionists, kitchen available for everyone and full breakfast every morning at 1.90£. Showers are a bit small and could be better adding more space for clothes.
What I expected
Everything I needed for a vacation on a budget and in a perfect location. CUTEST little breakfast nook in the dining room. WiFi was good throughout the day, slowed down in the evenings when everyone was there. Plenty of character in the lobby. There was a musty smell in my room, but to be expected in a building of that age.
Excellent hostel in a really good location
Excellent hostel in a really good location, could walk to most attractions. Fully equipped and massive kitchen. Big common area. Breakfast was cheap and decent. Room was a little cramped. Didn’t have to wait for a bathroom or shower. Would stay again.
Great place
I loved my stay at the royal mile, the people there were kindly and everything was very clean, and plus, i did the bar crawl, following the advice of the hostel workers and it was really awesome! I would come back any time.
An awesome hostel.
An awesome hostel. It offers an activity every day and the staff is really friendly. You can relax in the lounge or in the movie theater. The hostel offer free tea, coffee or hot chocolate. Room and kitchen were clean. The location is great. You can see the castle from the front door.
Nice staff, big hostel.
Nice staff, big hostel. Rooms are a bit small, and toilets and shower maybe short, but in truth I only needed to wait once in 3 nights.
Breakfast is £1,90 with fruit, cereals, toast with butter and jam. Quite nice for the price.
Only problem was a bit noisy street, with garbage truck a bit early
Absolutely wonderful place
Absolutely wonderful place. Basically the only reason not to stay here is if you’ve got a room in the actual castle, but assuming that you haven’t, this is the place to be. Lovely staff, big rooms with space if you need to reorganise your bag or whatever, a reasonable breakfast for 1.50 GBP every morning (though completely optional, the kitchen remains open if you want to buy your own cheerios… Read more “Absolutely wonderful place”
I’ve made two trips to
I’ve made two trips to Castle Rock hostel and have had the same amazing experience each time. The location is excellent- you really can’t get closer to all the amazing things to see in Edinburgh. Staff is super helpful, friendly, and keep the place clean. Whether traveling solo or in a group, the common room and nightly activities allow you to meet fellow travelers and explore the city.
Cool hostel in the centre of Edinburgh. Loved it
Cool hostel in the centre of Edinburgh. Loved it. Relaxed atmosphere, pool table, decent internet and kitchen. Rooms were a little on the stuffy side without the windows ope but that is my only slight complaint
However for the location, friendly staff and low price it was worth it
Stayed during my UK trip. I was in the 8 bed dorm which was spacious and had two cosy sofa chairs in the room. Breakfast was only two pounds and you get cereal, milk, juice, bread with jams and nutella! My dorm was above a pub so it can get noisy a night. However for the location, friendly staff and low price it was worth it. They also had posters… Read more “However for the location, friendly staff and low price it was worth it”
You should stay here!
I stayed here for 4 nights. Excellent location, right in the heart of the city. 5 minute walk from the train station. On the main road in Edinburgh. Staff is super friendly. Gave lots of good suggestions and recommendations. Very kind and willing to chat. Cleanest hostel I’ve ever stayed in. Tidy and warm. Spotless showers. Fire to sit by with comfortable couches. Nice kitchen area. Quite quiet in the… Read more “You should stay here!”
This hostel was very nice!
This hostel was very nice! The rooms were very cozy and clean, the staff was extremely friendly, the common room was really fun, and the location was great! I would 100% stay here again.
Excellent Location
Excellent location! The rooms and the bathrooms are clean. The staff friendly and helpful. We didn’t like the fact that after the breakfast, we had to wash our dishes Some people were just pouring water so the dishes were dirty for the next ones.
There’s nothing to complain about
There’s nothing to complain about this hostel. Everything’s perfect and do not change it. The hostel is the most beautiful of all accommodations where I’ve been so far. It’s cheap, friendly and the employees were always there as I needed. The hostel is generally clean. The hostel organizes party or events every night and you never get bored during your stay. If you don’t want to join, there are rooms… Read more “There’s nothing to complain about”
Nice people
Nice people, tidy and cozy place. Has fireplace, great for winter!
Cozy and very bohemian.
Cozy and very bohemian. The staff was nice. The room and the bathroom were clean. The rooms are spacious, so the number of people isn’t much of a bother. Great location, you don’t lose time going downtown because you are already there. BUT because of this and the number of people in each room I would recommend taking ear plugs with you, because things can get noisy. They have a… Read more “Cozy and very bohemian.”
Rooms are fantastic
Rooms are fantastic, showers are very good, and the staff was very helpful. I’d highly recommend this hostel! Each person gets a locker, you can rent a towel for 50 pence, and they offer a £2 breakfast. It’s also located in the perfect spot – very close to lots of bars and restaurants
